Mesa Communications Group LLC is acquiring Spectrum Resources Towers, L.P. Mesa is buying Spectrum from VS&A Communications Partners, the private equity affiliate of New York-based media merchant bank Veronis Suhler. Both Mesa and Spectrum are located in Falls Church, Va. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The purchase of Spectrum adds 73 towers in strong clusters in the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southwest and Midwest regions of the country that complement Mesa's existing network of towers. Spectrum also has another 75 towers in development in areas of New England and the Midwest where broadband wireless system deployment is underway.

"This acquisition allows us to more quickly obtain the critical mass of strategically located towers that we have been working towards" said Michael Williams, President of Mesa. "An added benefit is that we are also gaining extremely talented people at Spectrum, and the internal systems we need to operate a much larger, nationwide network of towers. Mesa will move its headquarters to Spectrum's office in Falls Church."

According to tower market analyst Jim Fryer, president of TowerSource.net, the purchase puts Mesa on the map as a new presence in the industry.

"This puts them in the top 10 tower companies in the country," Fryer said. "They have a veteran staff with solid financing behind them and I expect to see them closing more deals in the near future," he said.

Mesa was founded in March 1999 by Michael Williams, Jack Rupert, Rick Estes, Steve Mejia and Kevin Creed, former members of the management team of TeleCom Towers, L.L.C., which was one of the top five tower companies in the country before its sale in early 1999. Williams was a founder of TeleCom Towers.

Mesa's towers are designed to accommodate all types of wireless communications operators, including FM and TV broadcasters, broadband wireless carriers and paging and private land mobile radio operators. Mesa's financial partner is the US fund of Schroder Ventures, an international private equity group with over $7.5 billion in committed capital.
